Laelianthe Meadow Gold

Ugh, the one plant that I wanted to keep as one and not divide out of all the ones I have repotted, and this one just happens to be three separate 'chids! Oh well, just another reason to love Cloud's, you usually end up getting more that one 'chid in a pot, so you have extra to trade!!!

A piece for me!

A piece to trade! This one just finished working on its' third p'bulb, which was just sending out four new roots when I repotted it.

And here is all three happily potted up!

    Now, looks can be deceiving, as these three 'chids are not potted in all sphagnum. They are all potted in a mixture of CHC and chopped sphagnum, since they were originally potted in straight sphag, I didn't want to shock the roots too bad with a repot straight into CHC. The largest piece, which I am keeping, has the largest ratio of CHC/sphag, and there is a greater amount of sphag in the next largest one in the middle, and yet a greater amount of sphag in the smallest one on the right. The one thing I love about this species is that it grows ridiculously faster than either of the species parents, which are (L. anceps x Gur. aurantiaca).
    Now, in case your first meeting with IOSPE was in my last post, I thought I would explain it here. The Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia is a website that contains a pretty good amount of info about a good chunk of orchid species out there. From now on, I think it would be a great idea that when it comes to species or primary hybrids I am offering for trade, I will put a link to the species or parents of that particular 'chid in question. So in this case it would be, (L. anceps x Gur. aurantiaca). Sorry for the long-windedness, but I don't want to leave you all in the dark!

Bulbophyllum carunculatum v. sulawesi

Okay, so this is my Bulb. carunculatum v. sulawesi, on of the many Bulbos from Clouds. Since this was growing three separate growths in very different directions, I decided to divide and repot.

Here are all three divisions after I unpotted and got all the media out and divided. The one of the left is the one I am keeping, and the other two are up for trade.

From what I have gathered on the internet and various other sources, Bulb. carunculatum v. sulawesi is a clumping, sequential stinker with yellow blooms and a warty, blood-red lip, with flowers similar in shape to species such as echinolabium. Bulbophyllum dentiferum

Okay, so this repotting was kind of spur of the moment. I was just in my little piece of paradise, and I picked up this 'chid and took it to my 'repotting station,' that is, the kitchen counter. This is another one from Cloud's that I suspected was two separate plants, and my suspicions were correct, so I didn't do any dividing. This Bulbo is definitely a shallow rooter, so it is best to either grow it in a shallow pan, or in the case of the one I am going to trade, the one in the brown pot, fill a good portion with styrofoam peanuts.

Dividing, Remounting and Potting, Oh My!

Did you know I just love the look of mounted orchids? The Brassavola Grand Stars '#1' you see mounted was the first orchid I ever mounted, so I didn't really get it on properly. Because of this, each new growth decided to go further and further away from the mount, and they actually started to turn around and send new growths away from the mount. Because of this, I decided to unmount the Brassavola, and divide and pot it up.

I was just going to make it two pieces, as it split way in the back, but because the roots were really tangled, I had to cut the back portion off, which left me with three four p'bulb pieces.

I potted them into CHC, and put a thin layer of sphag on top just to help with new roots. Come spring, I can sell or trade two of the divisions.

Here is a quick shot of the crazy roots that were on this thing, and this was after I trimmed a bunch so I could fit it on the mount.

Here is a piece that wouldn't really fit on to the mount, so I cut it off and potted it separately. I will trade it come spring.

And finally, here is everything afterwards, all nicely mounted and potted up. The Bulbo conformed perfectly to the mount, which made it SO easy to mount!

Guarianthe skinneri

And finally, the last one of my current collection to be documented, Guarianthe skinneri. Terry Letandre (sp?) visited my OS in Sept, and he brought TONS of 'chids for sale. This is one of the ones I bought, and I am happy I did. I divided it planning on mounting one half, but I freaked out because I wasn't sure when they would root, so I ended up potting them. In reality, it was quite a large plant so I don't think mounting it would have been the greatest idea. I repotted the two halves separately, and they are now starting to root. Both of them actually have two sheaths, which is a characteristic of this and closely related species. I am going to have to wait until spring to see it bloom. The division on the right is for sale/trade.

Bulbophyllum nymphopolitanum

   Here is one of the awesome Bulbos I got from Cloud's Orchids, Bulb. nymphopolitanum ('MileHigh' x 'Halcyon'). This was all one plant, but I decided to divide it, and this is what I ended up with. The plant on the far left is what I am keeping, one is already promised to a trade, so that leaves the other two that I am selling or can trade.
